The Air-Lock log with its center-bored hole has many advantages.  The most important of these is better drying and seasoning.  Wood shrinks as it dries.  A solid log dries from the outside while its inner core retains moisture.  As the outside dries, it shrinks, but the inner core does not.  The result - checking and cracking caused by differential shrinkage.

Air-Lock logs are smooth and uniform in size.  Because the Air-Lock log is hollow, it dries from the inside as well as the outside.  Seasoning is more rapid and checking and cracking are minimized.  Because the Air-lock log is lighter, unloading and handling is easier, and shipping is less expensive.

The dead air space inside the Air-Lock log increases its insulation value, without significantly diminishing the thermal mass of the log.  As a result, the Air-Lock trademark means unique, high-quality house logs for your home.

Uniform sizes and precision precutting mean that your walls go up quickly, plumb, straight and true.  Without the need to frame, insulate, sheetrock or panel, the Air-Lock log walls are one-step simple.  Wiring can be hidden in the hollow of our logs, so no wires are visible.

THE HISTORY

1920's - A man named Royal Wright promoted a hollow log product that a man named Art Clough actually invented. Two factories were built, one in Ontario, Canada andthe other in Grayling, Michigan.

1930's - Both Canadian and US patents were issued for the construction process using the hollow log called Air-Lock Logs.

1940's - Tom Oster was working for the state of Montana in Economic Development. He remembered the Air-Lock Logs from his native Michigan and asked his old college roommate, Stephen Babcock, to join him in Montana and start a company. They formed National Log Construction Company in Thompson Falls, MT in 1946. After several years, Tom Oster sold his interest to Babcock to pursue his interest in Geology.

1955 - With the permission of his former partner, Tom Oster and his family formed a corporation in Prescott, Arizona. The new corporation was named Air-Lock Logs Company.

1971 - Air-Lock logs continued to be produced at the Thompson Falls manufacturing facility for the next 27 years.

1998 - Bill Hagedorn purchased the Thompson Falls plant and began production of the Air-Lock Log as Cabinet Mountain Log Works, L.L.C. The original trademark was shared with Air-Lock Log Homes in Prescott, AZ. Hence, the "sister" company relationship!

2005 - Air-Lock history has come full circle. Our new name is AIR-LOCK LOG HOMES, L.L.C. Bill Hagedorn is supported in the business by his daughter Carol Hagedorn. The production of the historical Air-Lock Log now comes solely from Air-Lock Log Homes, L.L.C. in Thompson Falls, Montana.
